Mekhail’s Dream by Michael R. Albert is an inspiring story with strong religious themes and a powerful message. The author tells the story of young Mekhail, born to parents who were Lebanese immigrants, and who ran a silent movie house. The youngest of nine children, he grew up asking questions about everything, even wanting to know how his parents were chosen. He is intrigued by nature and creation and wonders how everything is made. His parents came to the US in 1912 and settled in Ohio. His mother had suffered the ache of losing her firstborn child, Mary Jane, at a very tender age. Mekhail experienced sadness at losing his fourteen-year-old sister, Grace, who died from lead poisoning. His dream had always been to lead “a good life so that someday he would be good enough to go to heaven.” Then he had a dream and this book is about that dream.
In Mekhail’s dream, he is in heaven and watches God as he blesses the little children before sending them off. But there is sadness in his eyes, a disturbing sadness. Mekhail wonders why God should be sad on such a happy occasion, and God answers that he is sad because the children forget when they return to earth. They forget the instruction. This is a beautiful story that will appeal to young readers and that contains the message that adults also need to hear. It is a book about love and about spirituality that helps people to live in harmony. The writing is simple and the tone compassionate. Many readers will see themselves in the young protagonist. Mekhail’s Dream by Michael R. Albert can be read in 10 minutes, is colorfully illustrated, and is the perfect gift for Christmas.
