Megan's Birthday: Megan's World, Volume 4 is a coming of age novel for children and preteens, grades 4-6, written by Pamela Foland. Megan’s fourteenth birthday is quickly approaching, but her life is filled with so many other things right now that it’s hard to actually focus on the upcoming day. Her kitties are growing up and at twenty-one weeks old are wildly participating in their crazy teenage antics -- and she’s enjoying every minute of it. Her brother, Kevin, has just become a dad, and Megan’s not so sure about holding her new nephew when she and her parents visit Kevin and Stacey at the hospital. Then there’s Bentley, the German Shepherd, who Megan befriended at the Furry Friends Clinic, but whose growling and raised hackles make Megan wonder whether this newest pet-sitting opportunity is more than she can handle.
Megan's Birthday continues the story of a young girl whose discovery of day-old kittens some five months prior has changed her life. I loved being privy to Megan’s discussions of her life and day-to-day affairs with her kitties, and marveled as she worked her dog-whisperer magic with Bentley. Foland deftly addresses the wide range of issues affecting kids including family responsibilities, changes in friendships and thoughts about what they would like to be when they grow up. I was fascinated by the animal CPR class Dr. Newton holds, and, having taken a number of CPR classes, can now actually envision what an animal-related class would be like. Foland also brings up the issue of teen parents and their futures as eighteen-year-old Kevin soberly tells Megan not to give up on her dreams. Something tells me that Megan will make sure that Kevin does likewise. Foland’s story is well-written and has an engaging plot, and her characters have zing and vitality. Megan's Birthday: Megan's World, Volume 4 is most highly recommended.
