After an early journalistic career filled with achievement, Svetlana Meritt's life changes gear after a disastrous encounter in Mexico and she feels compelled to re-examine her values and her life path. She meets a soulmate and fellow searcher in her husband Dwight, and sets off on an adventure to explore the holy places of the world. The journey takes place across both inner and outer landscapes, and is chronicled in detail in Meet Me in the Underworld, which is part travelogue, part spiritual memoir. As they pass through Cyprus, Sicily, Rome, Naples, Provence and Brittany, to name a few, synchronicities and signs act as compass and road markers. The reader shares in a secret healing rite performed in a Greek tholos, as well as a mystic union with a fiery volcano.
Svetlana Meritt is an engaging narrator who brings realism to the intangible world of spiritual encounters. Throughout Meet Me in the Underworld, the reader shares in her quest for self-knowledge and is at times prompted towards inner reflection and self-examination. One learns that the past can be found not only in historical ruins, but also in intimate psychic impressions. Renaissance dramas are examined for karmic clues and we meet Black Madonnas, traverse strange labyrinths, and examine the psychological fallout a famous artist left in his wake. A word of warning - this book is not for sceptics or strict religious fundamentalists, although I have to add that they would be missing out on a heartfelt encounter that visits the very essence of spirituality. Thank you, Svetlana, for sharing a journey so personal with such emotional honesty, and thank you for capturing your husband's deceptively simple and gentle wisdom for posterity.
