An abused woman must face her fears and accept the fact that she is married to a monster in the gut-twisting short story, Me Too, by Belinda Bennett. Casey has been a victim of her wealthy husband's maniacal temperament since she met him. Because she is happy with the lifestyle he provides and is reluctant to let it go, Casey is willing to look past and endure her husband's offensive and sadistic behavior. It never occurred to Casey that his brutal attentions ever left the confines of their home. Casey believed she was special to him and she alone bore the brunt of his perverse affections. When Casey is confronted with another aspect of his vile and abominable conduct, she is shocked and appalled. Now Casey has an even more significant problem to deal with. With her affluent lifestyle at risk, what is Casey going to do with the knowledge she has? Is Casey a blameless victim or, because of her silence, is she a guilty party to her husband's crimes?
Betrayal, abuse, and denial are formidable foes in this gripping story by Belinda Bennett. This heartbreaking story demonstrates how the survival instinct works when perversion is at its basest. The depraved and twisted nature of Casey's husband is outrageous and sickening, but even more disturbing is the realistic reaction Casey portrays. This hit-the-nail-on-the-head account is an accurate rendition of an abusive situation and how the recipient excuses their aggressor. Although it was hard for me to read, this story gave me a good idea of how a victim relates to their situation and why they respond the way they do. This is an excellent true-life portrayal that can inspire women to stand up for themselves. However, due to the nature of the subject, this novel is more age appropriate for readers who are young adults and older.
