Do you believe in fairies and what would you do if you encountered one? Written by Stanislava Buevich and illustrated by Diana Akhmetova, Maya Fairy is a children’s adventure story. Maya (the fairy) graced the lives of Maya (a human child) and her parents. During one of the fights Maya had with her mother, she was ordered to go to her bedroom, where she continued sobbing out of frustration. After hearing Maya crying, Maya Fairy took her magical dust and set out to help Maya. Unfortunately, an accident occurred that revealed the fairy’s presence to Maya. Never having met a fairy before, Maya screamed in shock, and her parents went running into her bedroom. However, they did not believe their daughter’s explanation that she saw a strange little girl on her nose. Although her parents brushed off her assertions as a product of her imagination, Maya was convinced that what she saw was not an illusion. She set out to look for the fairy everywhere in their house, but was unsuccessful, despite several days of searching. She finally hatched a plan that she believed would reveal the little girl she had seen.
Told from the first-person point of view, the author vividly describes the events and fairies, enabling me to form mental images of everything that happened in the story. The descriptions were highly detailed, which made it easy to understand each setting. The story is set in a fantasy world that allows for magic, fairies, and other fantastical creatures. The author complemented her narration with illustrations of the characters, making this book ideal for children who are beginning to read independently. I especially loved the illustrations of Maya the fairy, which are simple and adorable. Stanislava Buevich and Diana Akhmetova also included other stories in Maya Fairy, which advanced the main storyline. These stories are important because they help kids learn to think critically, especially when they compare how the human world and the fairy world are different. I recommend this interesting book to children between the ages of nine and thirteen. Younger children will also benefit if adults or teachers read it aloud.
