Maureen Tries Online Dating is a sci-fi horror-comedy novel by Sherrill Wark. A misguided attempt at online dating goes horribly wrong when Maureen inadvertently brings her date close to death by giving him Viagra. With her friend, Sandra, Maureen tries to dump her date in a pit at a construction site. But things don't go according to plan, and soon Sandra, Maureen, and her date find themselves in the mysterious tunnels half a mile beneath the Ottawa River. Maureen discovers a vibrant ecosystem with creatures unlike any other and people who live harmoniously with them. A man named Xavier explains to Maureen the secrets of the colony and warns her of the 'zombie powder.' Now, someone is digging, which can lead to disastrous consequences. Meanwhile, Maureen learns about the person who dosed her date with zombie powder.
Author Sherrill Wark uses a swirling mix of genres to offer readers a campy horror story that entertains you from start to finish. With Maureen Tries Online Dating, you're never quite sure what's going to happen next as every chapter feels like a new adventure into the unknown. Infused with a seamless blend of humor, horror, suspense, and mystery, Wark's narrative takes you on a wild rollercoaster of a ride you don't want to end. The plot is evenly paced and pulls the rug from under your feet over and over again. The characters are full of quirks and will make you laugh at the most inopportune situations. I immensely enjoyed this book. If you like dark humor or are a fan of horror comedies, this will be right up your alley.
