Masters of Murder by Eagle Monsoon is a disturbing compendium of stories that deal with murder, including a father who murders someone just because he hurt him in a rugby game and goes on to tell the story to his child: “I didn’t want him coming back and doing something. Not a man like that.” Kevin is tough at work and wants to drive performance, but he gets murdered at work, pushed off a fifteen-storey building by colleagues: Anne-Marie, Mike, and Adrian. Readers meet Ron, a kind of hero, who puts a hammer in Phil’s head... Phil who killed Linda and lied about it for years. There are many such stories, gripping and disturbing, all told in the first-person. But can there be a perfect murder?
Eagle Monsoon’s stories are dark and readers encounter characters who kill for the flimsiest of reasons, perhaps the adrenaline rush or a little discomfort. The theme of murder runs through the stories and as one turns from page to page, one experiences the unsettling sense of the tragedy possessing the characters. The stories are short and focused, and the suspense is exacting. I wanted a follow-up on the crimes, but it feels like the perpetrators go free, which drives home the message that someone can commit murder and get away with it. The humor is one of the author’s greatest gifts and it helps to play down the tension. Masters of Murder is fast-paced and psychologically rich, a collection of stories that makes readers discover the murderer in themselves and why people kill.
