Marionette by T. B. Markinson is the story of seventeen-year-old Paige Alexander. Paige is found in her home with slit wrists by her girlfriend. Her friend convinces her to undergo therapy. Though Paige does not think it is going to help her, she decides to see a therapist to please her friend. She is not keen to see the therapist because she does not want to be reminded of her past. There are a lot of demons in her past and she does not want to relive those moments again. The character of Paige Alexander, though flawed, is one that teenagers can relate to and many of them can find a part of their life in hers.
The story grows on you. It is the sort of situation that you find happening in society around you. Paige Alexander's characterization is strong and the rest of the characters in the story ably support her. Jess, as Paige Alexander's girlfriend, is well portrayed too. Many readers growing up and grown in dysfunctional families will be able to relate well to what Paige Alexander is going through in the book.
Attempted suicide, homosexuality, and dysfunctional family are the themes of the story. The damage that a dysfunctional family can do to a teenager is expressed well. The theme is relevant in current society and many teenagers do find themselves in this situation. The book has mystery, action, suspense, and sadness woven together to make it a good, fast paced novel. An interesting book with a lot of emotions and drama woven together.
