Barbara Schnell brings us an inspiring chick-lit romp in Marianne Moves On. As the youngest of three children, Marianne Fuchs was never expected to amount to much. Looking nothing like her petite and ferocious mother, Marianne is tall and blonde and enjoys softball. Expected to marry someone in their hometown in South Dakota, Marianne decides to move away from her parents and make a life for herself in Los Angeles. Adventure awaits! As it turns out, being in a new town can be quite lonely and boring. When her attractive and charming roommate suggests they get married to buy property, Marianne reluctantly agrees. Marriage was never really part of her plan. And what about love? Isn’t love and marriage supposed to go together?

Author Barbara Schnell has created a beautiful story with realistic and relatable characters, full of personality. Written in a first-person narrative from the perspective of the leading lady, you will have the inside scoop on all her thoughts and feelings. With a steady pace, you are guaranteed to keep turning the pages from start to finish. I loved how level-headed and practical the main character is. I also found the different dynamics of family relationships quite enjoyable to observe. This will ring true for all of us if we only take the time to listen. Marianne Moves On is a lovely story of growth and communication. With some swearing and a few instances of sex and violence, without anything too graphic, this book is suitable for young adult readers as well.

I loved and also wanted to strangle some of the characters. Marianne’s mother was a piece of work. No wonder some children grow up with emotional handicaps, but Marianne handled her well!
