Margery is a life-altering novel by Jeffrey Penn May. When Jeremy stumbles upon a small town hidden within the woods while hiking in the mountains, he is unprepared for its significant impact on his life. After following two strangers, Jeremy finds himself in a community where peculiar people live, from a dentist with the optimism of a young child to a woman who keeps repeating the same tales. Here, Jeremy meets Margery, a woman who bungee jumps from cliffs daily to feel alive. Margery instantly wins Jeremy's heart but will not reciprocate the feeling. It does not take long before people in the town die, and others disappear without reason. Jeremy starts questioning what is happening but cannot make himself leave the town.
Margery by Jeffrey Penn May is an eye-opening story about the mortality of humankind and how we handle it. The novel is written in the first person, which ensured that I understood entirely what was happening to Jeremy throughout the story. Hearing his thoughts about the things happening around him gave me a new perspective on how death influenced him on another level. The character development within Jeremy is notable as he experiences each passing. As the novel progresses, Jeremy’s thoughts become more disorientated, which shows the effect everything has on him. The author was excellent in his portrayal of the finite reality of human lives and the question of what we leave behind. The novel had me questioning if what I am doing will ultimately have any effect on the people I leave behind. Margery is not just a story to be read but must finally be contemplated in depth.
