Malled: A Tale of Revenge by Lee Tidball focuses on Hector Chevas, a young street punk with a talent for architectural design who saves a young girl from being raped by a gang. Janey falls in love with him, a love which doesn't fade over the next few years. When they are reunited, Hector is a different person, after having lost the only man he could call father and discovering that his friends have died at the hands of local gangsters and 'soul killers.' Determined to avenge them, he puts his diabolical plan into action by rigging the new mall with deadly traps. Janey is in the process of putting her life back together after the attack. She has come out of it stronger, thanks to Hector's support.
Lee Tidball's story focuses on morality and how having someone loving and believing in you can help to redeem you. Malled: A Tale of Revenge is told from various viewpoints, but the main character is Hector and his inner struggle between doing the right thing and exacting revenge.
Janey is a strong, quick witted character who isn't afraid to say what she is thinking. She could have easily ended up down a dark path herself, but it was Hector saving her that turned her life around and made her a better person. Through time, she gets the opportunity to reciprocate. The storyline almost seems to be lifted from a superhero comic with rather an anti-hero in Hector. The villains are larger than life, the elaborate deaths are well crafted, but this is not a bad way to tell a story.
