Mailman Tales by Jess Thornton was a pleasant little read. In the book, Thornton tells about his experiences as a mailman in a little town. This book made me long for the days when everyone respected each other and neighbors looked out for each other. Thornton writes as if he is sitting next to the reader, talking with them. He started out as a mailman in Chicago and moved to the small town of Kachuda. Although he never really states where exactly Kachuda is, only that it is “a Mississippi river town,” he made me want to move there. In Mailman Tales, Thornton shares his stories about the routes he delivered and the people he delivered to.

My favorite story of his was the “Missing Street Sign.” I loved that the woman made it her duty to make sure everyone got their mail. I also enjoyed that his friends had such strong devotion to their pets. Having a pet cow is pretty cool in my eyes. The stories about Tiny Tim and his beloved dog, Fred, were hilarious I also loved how much Thornton enjoyed his job. They do not make postmen like him anymore! I’m lucky to get my mail delivered to the correct block! I am glad that he explained exactly what a mailman does. It is so much more than just putting letters in a mailbox. I enjoyed reading this book. It has given me a new respect for mailmen, or at least for some mailmen. If you like to read about what it is like living in a small town, then this book is for you.
