Magic Harbor is a work of fantasy fiction written for a young adult audience by author Kristen L. Jackson. The second novel in the Keeper of the Watch Series, this adventure can be read as a standalone but does also follow on from Keeper of the Watch, in which Chase Walker was persuaded to become a dimensional traveler by Alyx Eris. Now the pair arrives in Dimension 8, a world where magic is real and it's also a dangerous threat to the power of the Watches itself. Mythical creatures, powerful mages, and dark beasts line the path as Chase and Alyx take on the quest to restore balance here, and in all dimensions as a result.
Combining elements of magical fantasy fiction, dimension-hopping sci-fi and dark thriller action-adventure is no mean feat, but author Kristen L. Jackson has developed a wonderful balance and genre-mash which brings something truly unique to the table. The reading experience is enhanced with pace and atmosphere in the narrative, throwing us into scenes at breakneck speed so that we too are caught up in the wonder and spectacle around us. Jackson’s imaginative adaptation of myth and magic brings originality and new life to an often overdone genre, and the close-up narration of the central characters keeps us on their psychological arc as they mature and grow up to face massive challenges. Overall, Magic Harbor is a fantastic story and a wonderful addition to an accomplished fantasy series. A highly recommended read.
