Becky James is a typical teenage girl with a ton of responsibilities on her plate. It’s her senior year, and she’s trying to show her best side to impress college admissions. Besides going to school, she’s part of the social justice club, she’s in the school band, the manager of the boys’ basketball team, and volunteers at a nursing home. Mrs. Evans, the school guidance counselor, asks Becky if she will host a new student. Becky gladly accepts, so it looks even better for college admissions. Gene Newman is the new kid from New York Becky is hosting. Gene is socially awkward but extremely intelligent. He is so smart that he aces a quiz on his first day. He also tends to pick up on things very quickly. He impresses Becky by trying out for the school band, and his performance is outstanding. He also tries out for the basketball team. Gene further impresses Becky by making the team and being one of the best players. But things aren’t adding up or making sense. How is Gene such a quick learner and able to adapt to his environment as fast as he has? Is there more to him than meets the eye? Could he be an alien? Or a lab experiment? Eric Walters' Made for You will keep you wondering and guessing until the end.
Anything with science and things unknown have always fascinated and interested me. The plot of this story had scientific research interwoven and the element of surprise. The story's pace was slow at first but picked up toward the middle as everything came together. Overall, it has a great flow throughout. My favorite part was the ending due to all the action. Just when I thought I knew what would happen, Eric Walters threw me a curveball, and the storyline took on an unexpected twist. I fell in love with the two main characters, Becky and Gene. Becky was such a warm and empathetic person in the way she took to Gene. Gene was protective and caring toward Becky. It was lovely to watch their relationship blossom. The theme had me thinking and questioning things when it came to science. This book makes you think about stuff you usually wouldn’t. A unique, well-written novel. If you are looking for an intense, edge-of-your-seat thriller, then Made for You is the book for you.
