Lucky’s Adventure in Winter Wonderland is a children’s picture book written by Elizabeth Macy and illustrated by Jenn Kocsmiersky. A young rescue dog named Lucky Charms (but nicknamed ‘Lucky’) tells the story of the day it snows. Excited, Lucky quickly puts on her winter clothes and runs to the park to meet up with all of her friends and play in the snow. The day is filled with great fun and adventure as the dogs hike through the fresh snow and end up at the outdoor ice skating rink. After a day packed with fun, Lucky’s feline sister back at home, Hershey Kisses, talks about the many other animals at the animal shelter which have yet to find a forever home. Lucky has a wonderful idea which will change the lives of the homeless animals.
I very much enjoyed the story of Lucky Charms and her animal friends. Having worked with animals for many years in shelters, I recall the joy I felt at the sight of a wagging tail and a smile as each animal went to their forever home. Lucky’s Adventure in Winter Wonderland is targetted towards very young readers and tells this tale in such a special way. Children learn at a young age about the many different behaviors of animals. I feel that Elizabeth Macy’s magical story is one which will be enjoyed by many generations to come. Not only do young readers learn how important it is for animals to be adopted from shelters, but they also see it through the eyes of the animals themselves. I recommend Lucky’s Adventure in Winter Wonderland to children everywhere, of all ages, and believe that the experience of visiting shelters and owning pets is very rewarding, both to the animal and the owner. I cannot wait to read more books from Elizabeth Macy in the future.
