Love In A Dying World by Gary Corcoran is a mystery/suspense novel and the second book in the Michael Devlin series, preceded by book one, South on Pacific Coast Highway. Michael Devlin is a California private investigator who is approached by the comfortably chic Lila Evergreen about her missing daughter, Holly. With the only lead being a biker named Potter, Devlin adds the case to his stack. Curiously, also added to the stack are the missing high-value collectibles of another client, whose daughter, Charlotte Huntington, is Holly's close friend. Charlotte has also disappeared with the timing being dangerously close to a body being found. Devlin is able to trace Holly on more than one occasion, but the cat and mouse game escalates to teen hostage situations, shoot-outs, and a scenario where a rich man seems to care more about getting his Picasso returned than seeing his daughter again.
There were moments where I genuinely believed that Love In A Dying World should be renamed Michael Devlin and the Crazy Women. I'm telling you, this guy is practically drowning in a swamp of mad estrogen. He's a trooper though, between a hot mama who just loves to drunk call him and an ex who tries to swat away imaginary bees whenever Devlin does what he never does, which is show emotion. Caitlan is able to get him to the soft spot but the history there is complicated. I'd imagine returning to the first book would do a good job of filling in those blanks, and given the extraordinary level of writing quality of this installment, it will be a delight to do that. Gary Corcoran has crafted Devlin masterfully, with perfectly timed dry humor that is deadpan delivered but still drips from the page. Other very human touches are added to his layering, such as his life of sobriety and the company he keeps. The ancillary characters that make up this company are diverse and equally well fleshed out. This is an incredibly well-executed story that I would give a whole bucket of stars to if I could.
