Little Star is a pop-up children’s book written by Christina Sendejo. Little Star is excited when his friend, Zippy, comes to visit. They race each other to different planets before Little Star’s mother calls them home. After Zippy wins each race, Little Star is a bit disheartened, but tells Zippy he is the best star. Zippy then explains to Little Star that they are two different types of stars; Zippy is a shooting star (a meteor) while Little Star is a wishing star which shines extra brightly in the sky so that children can see him and make special wishes when they do so. Little Star is sad when Zippy tells him that his time is almost over and that he cannot play anymore. After Zippy leaves, Little Star’s parents explain that Little Star has countless happy memories of Zippy and they will be with him forever. Little Star smiles when he thinks of his time spent with Zippy and realizes that his parents are right.
This book is not only one of entertainment, but also carries a valuable educational aspect that points out the differences between two common types of stars which are visible to the human eye. Little Star is beautifully presented with such bright and colorful illustrations, sure to bring a smile to any young child’s face. Christina Sendejo has written a very clever story which pulls at the heartstrings of all ages. Death is a very big part of life and when a friend leaves, it is a sad time. Little Star teaches young children that when a friend leaves or dies, the memories inside of you will never be taken away and will bring a smile to cheer up your day. I very much enjoyed Little Star and think it should be stocked in town and school libraries. I recommend this book to be read to or with children from 2-8 years old.
