Little Miss Jean and The Time Machine by Karri Theis is about a little girl who was having problems battling boredom and finding things to do. Jean woke up one day to find a shimmering silver box that was waiting for her. Sensing that this was going to be the start of a new and fun adventure, the little girl hopped in. What she wasn’t expecting, though, was to be taken to her grandma's house. Her grandmother ended up teaching Jean many activities to occupy her when she is bored and that don’t involve much preparation or thought. All it took was her imagination, which was something that Jean didn’t take into consideration. She’s transported back to her home with new ideas and excitement.
Little Miss Jean and The Time Machine is such a fun children’s book that discusses a form of play that isn’t quite the same anymore. Nowadays most kids' eyes are glued to their tablets, televisions, video games, and smartphones. Few kids use their imaginations when it comes to playing these days and I’m so happy that Karri Theis raised the subject in this book. I’m one of the last generation who remembers playing outside with friends until the street lights came on and using our imaginations with what little we had around us. It’s sad that kids nowadays rarely do this, but I feel this book can help to spark that aspect of play again. The illustrations are also gorgeous and fit the storyline perfectly. I enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what else Karri Theis comes up with next.
