You might be best friends with your siblings, but there are times when you might feel a little jealous of the attention the other is receiving. In Kim Stewart’s Little Frog and the Butterfly, Little Frog loves his little sister, but when she receives extra attention, he can’t help but feel jealous. When his little sister sprouts wings one day, turning into a butterfly, Little Frog says some mean things like, “I wish you weren’t my sister!” His butterfly sister is hurt and flies away. Fortunately, Little Frog feels remorse, especially when his mother convinces him that she has enough room in her heart to love both siblings equally. Little Frog goes after his butterfly sister, but will he be able to rescue her from captivity? Little Frog has a lot to learn about friendship: “The best way to be a friend is to care about his happiness as well as your own.”

Kim Stewart’s picture book, Little Frog and the Butterfly, has some valuable lessons to share about family, friends, and the overpowering emotion of jealousy. The story is told in simple language so young readers can follow along. It reads like a fairy tale and, like all good fairy tales, it teaches young readers. With more narrative and dialogue than the usual picture book, this book offers a bridge for young readers looking to advance to longer books and even chapter books. The plot follows Little Frog, his developing connection with his sister, and, sadly, the growing seed of jealousy. The illustrations are spectacular and add another dimension to this magical story. A beautiful, heartfelt story.
