Lisbeth by Marina Brown is a powerful book that reads as though it was written with a spell, a novel that makes references to history and a culture any sane person would love to forget. Claire Elliston just wants to rebuild the house her mother once lived in forty years ago, but little does she know that as the ruins are stirred, they awaken the dark spirits of the past, spirits that are intimately linked to the Jim Crow South and its sordid ways. The arrival of a German doctor in Claire’s community changes everything as the past comes to life and Claire is forced to face disturbing truths. It’s for the reader to discover the ways of Jim Crow, what the color line signified in the sad old days, and how a black and white family discovers the strength to embrace the differences and to love again.
Marina Brown’s novel is a compelling story that revisits a part of the history lived along the Mississippi, a story of racism, love, and redemption. The story is told in an arresting manner and the reader is seduced by the beauty of the prose, its fluidity, the wonderful phraseology and the captivating diction. The author combines the excellent art of storytelling with humor to create great entertainment for readers. The conflict is well-developed and readers will be caught up in it. Apart from the compelling cast of characters and other elements that come across in Lisbeth, Marina Brown takes credit for her ability to seamlessly weave powerful themes into her story. It is, indeed, a satisfactory read, a story as disturbing as it is enjoyable.
