Liquid Comfort - A Surf Story by Cheryl Lee Petro is the story of Travis Kelly whose only dream is to win the world surfing championship. Things take an unexpected turn when an accident leaves him disabled. He had no other life beyond surfing and he becomes addicted to alcohol and follows a path of self-destruction. The book is the struggle of Travis Kelly who wants the ocean, his girlfriend, and a union with his family. The story takes you on a bumpy ride through Travis' accident, his surfing, his addiction, self destruction, determination, and coming to terms with reality.
It is a story of ups and downs, twists and turns, and sadness and joy that is woven with success and triumph. The author has narrated the story so well that you can actually connect with the characters and feel their pain and sorrow. The tragedy when Travis is attacked by a shark, which results in him losing an arm, is heart wrenching. The gruesome ordeal Travis goes through and then how he gets back into life show his courage and determination. It also has an underlying message of recovery and getting back into life after adversities and tragedies.
The story also is about two brothers, Travis and Devin. Travis, who was banking on Devin to give him the much needed emotional support, finds himself left alone, battling to overcome his difficulties. Will Carl as a single father be able to support both Travis and Devin and see them happy?
