Skylar is paranoid and filled with grief from past trauma. Amber Herbert’s Lipstick Covered Magnet is a unique story that explores the minds of Skylar and Connor. Both of the characters are attending the same college and had two classes together. At the local bookstore, Skylar scans the books Connor brought to the counter. They exchange names, and she volunteers she has the same class. Connor feels drawn to her. Later that evening, he attends a dorm party with his roommates. Skylar pays no attention to Connor but ends up going home with one of his roommates. As time passes, Connor’s obsession grows, and he stalks her movements. Skylar becomes alarmed by his coincidental encounters and makes it well known she wants him to leave her alone. However, Connor is not someone who lets go of hope for his imagined future.

Amber Herbert integrated the past of Skylar’s trauma by indicating the personal growth the character undergoes. She was appealing and flirty at the start of the book. I could understand why Connor’s first interaction seemed like he had her interest. The fact that a roommate took her home for a one-night stand would insult me, and it surprised me he did not get into a major fight with Simon. I believe his upbringing had a lot to do with Connor’s mentality. The story is fast-paced, and every supporting character offers depth to the main character’s personality. The end of the story has both grief and triumph. I had hoped for a different outcome, but this is a realistic story and Lipstick Covered Magnet portrays the realities in complete detail.
