When an earthquake shook the world around Lily, for the protagonist of Lily's Rebirth by Angelina Kerner, it was not a good start to 2023. The first moments of the new year turn into a nightmare as Lily fell into a hole that opened under her home. It wasn’t just a normal hole; Lily somehow found herself in a different world once she woke up. Sadly, that wasn’t the worst of it. She also falls into the hands of a cruel doctor who is delighted at having someone new to experiment on. His experiment will change Lily’s life in more than one way.
Lily's Rebirth by Angelina Kerner is a relatively short book, but that's not necessarily bad. You can finish in a day or two as it’s hard to put down; the plot grabs you right from the beginning. Readers will spend quite a bit of time with Lily and the aftereffects of the experiment (no spoilers!). There were different ideas within the plot I found quite fascinating. An example is connecting different worlds through these "holes," like the one Lily fell through. It feels like a lot of world-building happened behind the scenes. As a reader, you can tell the author put thought into the lore and how everything fits together. Getting to know Lily and the other characters better was fun, and I think their stories are interesting enough to fill an entire series. The story handles some complex topics, but I think even more sensitive readers will appreciate how challenging situations are handled and how the author depicts a realistic reaction to trauma in a fantasy setting.
