Lights On by Joey Paul is the second book in the Lights Out trilogy. We follow Lock and Clara in this second installment, fleeing their cityship after a successful escape from the base. They have made powerful enemies who will do anything to catch and silence them. They are beset by challenges on the way, including being pursued by the military of the tyrannical government, injury, being kidnapped, and more. As they inch toward the local resistance movement, they must deal with dwindling resources and muster up enough courage to stay ahead of their pursuers. Lock’s ex, Lana, works with the government to catch her and her friend. What awaits them at the end of the tortuous road? Can they survive long enough to join the resistance and bring down the corrupt, oppressive government?
Lights On is another fascinating book in the trilogy, with multi-dimensional, skillfully written characters. The plot is twisty, and the conflict is complex, explored from different angles. Lana is one of the characters that readers will surely hate. The relationship between Lock and Lana is characterized by betrayal, and Lana’s drive to capture Lock is fueled by the fact that Lock has shared many secrets with her. Lark is another character that will emotionally affect readers. Joey Paul’s dazzling prose enticed me; the vivid descriptions and the well-crafted dialogues create an enjoyable reading experience. The tale is suspenseful, filled with mystery and intrigue. It will appeal to readers who enjoy characters rising up against tyranny and oppression. Lights On has strong plot points, endearing characters, and a fascinating dystopian setting. The action never slackens, the pacing stays fast, and the surprises are continuous.
