Fireflies are so magical! In Lightning Bug Lights by Jason Paul, we meet little Edamarie who has a big imagination. Her mother is reading her a story when Edamarie suddenly asks, “Why do lightning bugs flash at night?” Her mother doesn’t know the answer and neither does her brother. She calls her Daddy; he doesn’t know either, but he promises they will figure it out when he gets home. Time drags for little Eda, as she waits for her Daddy to return. Finally, as the skies start to darken, he arrives and after a quick meal, they venture out to find the flashing bugs. Soon they are surrounded, and Dad explains why they flash. Satisfied, Daddy carries Edamarie home and tucks her gently in bed.
Jason Paul’s charming, rhyming story is a perfect read for a warm summer’s night. Edamarie’s question about the lightning bugs is one many kids will have wondered themselves. Stemo’s illustrations are richly saturated with color. Kids will love keeping an eye out for her toy frog, which comes to life in several pictures. It’s so nice to see a family that welcomes Edamarie’s questions. Everyone who has waited until dusk to see fireflies will appreciate the scene of Eda and her father as they walk to see them. I remember vividly chasing and catching lightning bugs with my friends on warm summer evenings. So, grab a flashlight, a blanket, and read Lightning Bug Lights to your own inquisitive little ones. Lightning Bug Lights is a celebration of children’s curiosity and the wonders of the natural world.
