At the very first glance of the cover of Lies We Will Tell Ourselves: Science Fiction Short Stories by Andrew Knighton, one finds it riveting. It generated a complex image of my many faults in my mind – followed by an intense curiosity as to how a sci-fi novel can be remotely connected with a subject like Behavioral Science. So I started turning page after page of an amazing collection of startling stories – each of which in its own unique way touched an emotion in my mind and heart – priceless! The language and prose are word perfect with all the passages flowing perfectly into the next. Each story has a unique theme with powerful protagonists. Perhaps sacrificing a mite of development, the author goes straight to the heart of the theme without embellishment and cosmetic descriptions.
The book consists of a collection of 10 incredible short stories, each ending in an explosive, unthinkable climax. The stories have many canvasses, ranging from futuristic worlds to stories about our own world, with each a grand vision of what is, what can be, and what may really happen. Questions whirl as one reads the stories – will the hero save himself or the angel his comrades know has come to save them all? How will the old man react when given a chance to be revived in another age and be with his eternal love of 40 years? Is there anything like truth in the world or are we happily living in a web of "Lies We Will Tell Ourselves"? Though there are only 10 short stories which have all been published before in various science fiction magazines, Andrew Knighton has given sci-fi fans a fine gift in this compilation. For the depth of imagination, originality of theme and plot, the book certainly deserves a "Well done!" I look forward to more from this outstanding author.
