Library Monster by Laurel Lorenzini sees the book-eating monster, Howard, escape from his book; will the children be able to capture him, or will he destroy the library? When Miss Beth, the librarian, opens Hungry Howard Escapes, the monster in the book comes to life and starts eating books. He runs into the library. The children must develop a plan to save the library. Finally, it dawns on them that Howard escaped from a book, so maybe they can put him back into a book. Join the children on an adventure as they work together to overcome the problem. Putting their heads together, they devise a plan of action that includes singing nap-time songs and using the right book to capture Howard. What type of book would you use to capture an escaped book character? Your children will be thrilled by the action in Library Monster.
I think this is the third book by Laurel Lorenzini that I have reviewed, and they seem to keep getting better. Laurel is a master writer and knows how to keep children’s attention. Library Monster combines the love of books with the love of adventure. What better way to develop a love of reading in children? The text is enhanced by the superb illustrations by Daniela Garcia. This book will become a favored children’s classic; I predict it will become as popular as Green Eggs and Ham was for my generation. To demonstrate my point I still have a copy of Green Eggs and Ham in my library. I suggest you buy and read Library Monster; you will enjoy spending time reading and discussing this with your child.
