Let's Go Walking in the Storm by Gloria D Gonsalves is a compilation of the author's original poetry intended, by way of its subtitle and themes, to touch and revolve around the soul and spirit. Gonsalves provides a massive expanse of work with the reading of around one hundred and fifty pieces in total. All are written in freestyle with varying degrees of lyricism to the verses, length, structure. There are works such as Drinking from a Blue Teacup that takes shape with the use of sliding stanzas and a clever double-reading of soliloquies that coexist in the same poem. The poem Je, Wewe Ni Mbaguzi? is written entirely in Gonsalves' native tongue, Swahili. And the poem A Weary Soul Conjuring Up Life is written in English with a verse that's been translated to/from Elvish.
There is no denying that Gloria D Gonsalves is an extraordinarily talented poetess and writer. Let's Go Walking in the Storm is just gorgeous. Truly. The range of poetry that melds into each other while at the same time channeling the balanced authority and questioning of Gonsalves' voice is something I've not found in a long, long time. The inclusion of social dissertations such as A Reflection on Nurturing Racial and Cultural Tolerance allows a reader to look behind the curtain and directly into the mind of Gonsalves as she unapologetically bares her anger, her strength, her weakness, her soul. In a day and age when almost anything can be experienced with the flick of a thumb and a glass screen, it's refreshing to relax and immerse ourselves in words that force reflection. Very highly recommended.
