Tracy Orchard’s Leona and the Crown of Llangollen is a fantasy story about Leona’s journey to her destiny. Leona is an agile hunter, can communicate with animals, possesses powerful magic, and is a natural-born elf. Leona is hunting in the forest when a dragonman flies after her. As Leona describes the dragonman to the other elves, she receives a message. The oracles tell her to find the gatekeeper, who could tell her where to find a magical crown to fulfill a prophecy. Facing a long journey into the mountains, the elves set out to find the gatekeeper. Meanwhile, Voltar and Leona grow closer and fall in love. This angers Losia, who takes every opportunity to prevent them from being alone. At night, Leona keeps hearing the dragonman calling her name. What did he want from her?
Author Tracy Orchard focuses on the themes of redemption and destiny. Leona's independent nature is both a strength and a weakness. Losia's attempt to gain Voltar's attention exposed her jealousy. Voltar’s affection for Leona exposes his insecurity as a leader. The dragonman, Neoadkin, was persistent in trying to separate Leona from the elves. The suspense builds throughout the journey, which captivated me. The author described every personality with exceptional detail and from planning to execution, the battle scenes were well-developed. The transitions from one day to the next were clear, which made it easy to follow the timeline. The discussions that Leona had with other characters gave clues about what it meant for her destiny to be. Leona and the Crown of Llangollen will appeal to readers who enjoy stories full of adventure, magic, and slow-burn romance.
