In Legend of the Dewberry Harvester by Jan Ezelle, little Brewnie ant is terrified of having to work outside yet again, but his mother Queen Naamah insists he has to face his fears and the dangers that lurk in Tick Trefoil forest. Brewnie somehow manages to get separated from the rest of the troops and encounters different creatures including nasty giants who plan to use their trickery seed to destroy entire villages. When he finally arrives home, he discovers his home in darkness. Brewnie has been locked out. He decides that as he is no longer wanted, he has no choice but to face the night and the danger alone. Brewnie uses his knowledge of the trickery seed to gain trust and respect from a pirate queen. Soon he is planning a future and building a successful new village until he receives a message that his mother is in danger. Brewnie is the only one that can help her but it means he has to face his biggest fear; the beast of Tick Trefoil.
Legend of the Dewberry Harvester by Jan Ezelle is a must-read for any child that loves nature. The descriptive narrative brings to life the forest and the many creatures that live there. I loved the character of Brewnie; his development throughout the story was perfect as he was forced to face his fears. The characters are created with such detail, especially wise old Ms. Beatle and the bloodthirsty Black Widow, who all teach Brewnie important life lessons. I thought these powerful messages in the story would make terrific discussion points for parents and children. I believe any reader would learn so much about friendship, honesty, and trust while reading this book. I also thought tackling the subject of facing your fears and learning to work together as a team is a beneficial lesson for children to learn. I would love to see this book in school libraries.
