Learn Spanish: Substitution Method Joke Book is a bi-linguistic method of language-learning, written by Neil Roy McFarlane. With each joke presented, a word which is used more than once is eventually replaced with the Spanish equivalent. Through repetition, the reader is able to remember each Spanish word taught, with the eventual goal being that they will easily be speaking another language in a very short amount of time. While the text initially replaces easy words (eg. dog – perro, migraines – jaquecas, etc), more difficult translations take place as the book goes deeper into each joke, the likes of which contain subject matter related to job applications, medical visits, teaching, animals and more. On reaching the third section of the book, the reader is able to test how well they remember what they have learned, as the joke book loses English words entirely, thereby presenting itself completely in Spanish.
I was actually quite surprised by the number of words I was able to remember as time went on. Neil Roy McFarlane’s easy method to learning Spanish was not only effective, but extremely entertaining. The jokes included in the book were quite humorous, with each one causing me to laugh out loud (once I actually got the joke, that is). Although I am tri-lingual, being a speaker of my tribal language (Gubbi Gubbi), English and Finnish, as well as being fluent in two different forms of Sign Language, never before have I seen this particular style of teaching utilized in order to teach a new language. Each joke was fun, with new words filling my head in record time. I quite enjoyed Learn Spanish: Substitution Method Joke Book, and recommend it to those who are not only interested in acquiring a new language, but also in expanding on their sense of humor.
