Last Light Falling: The Covenant, Book 1 by J. E. Plemons is the story of twins Arena and Gabe (though the focus is on Arena), who were orphaned at a young age and raised by loving foster parents. After losing their parents, they also lost contact with their Uncle Finnagan and assumed him dead, as he had been sent out into a war zone. On their 15th birthday, however, they receive a mysterious letter and a key, and they are shadowed by a strange priest. While the world is falling apart around them, and loved ones die in tragic events, the twins have to accept their fate: that they are the chosen ones, the only ones who can save the people on the planet.
I generally do not read books like Last Light Falling: The Covenant, Book 1 by J. E. Plemons because I usually avoid anything that could be labelled as Christian fiction. But as I found this book in the dystopia section, I was rather intrigued by the plot promised in the summary. Last Light Falling: The Covenant, Book I is an easy to read story, though it has plenty of violence in parts. It is an interesting tale that shows a rather bleak outlook for humanity, but also hope that lies in people like Arena and her brother Gabe. The story is packed with action and excitement, but also with philosophy. I would recommend the book for a young adult audience with a Christian background - though other people might also be able to enjoy the story if they are able to just accept God as some sort of fantasy tale.
