Lace Curtain by Jeanne Charters is set during the Civil War from 1857 and begins on Mary Boland and Daniel Kelly’s wedding day in Massachusetts. Daniel becomes one of the best lawyers in Boston and Mary opens a birthing clinic. They have one daughter, Nellie, who becomes an A-student at St. Augustine’s Catholic school and dreams of being a trapeze artist or a teacher. Her friend Neo Okafors, who wants to be a magician, is the son of Kam Okafors from Africa who came over from Ireland on the ship with Mary and Daniel. Nellie is preparing to pass her exams when she is expelled from school due to monstrous lies. Neo convinces Nellie to run away with him to New York to join the circus, where Neo falls in love with trapeze artist Angelique Flaubert and plans to ask her father Pierre for her hand in marriage. When tragedy befalls the circus, Nellie returns to Boston to enroll at a new school and is befriended by Rosie Marino, but soon their friendship is ruined by Rosie’s betrayal, a mistake that destroys Rosie’s dreams. While Nellie has to deal with her own family tragedy, she is forced to decide between the two men she loves.
Lace Curtain: Daughters of Ireland, Book 2 is a fantastic novel, beautifully written and filled with an array of interesting characters who learn and teach each other about trust, love, sin, confidence, prejudice, and discrimination – to name a few. Nellie is courageous and determined to succeed no matter what stands in her way, much like her parents. The story highlights the trials and tribulations faced by women and people who are subjected to discrimination. The characters and scenes of Boston, New York, and Ireland are vividly described as well as the houses and buildings. I particularly enjoyed the flow of the story, as well as the twists and turns. Overall, a great novel, highly recommended, and thoroughly enjoyable.
