Kona and the Lumpy Bumps by Carly Major is a heartwarming children's book that gently addresses the challenges of sensory sensitivities and anxieties. Through the story of Kona, a playful Pitbull with an unusual obsession for having his blanket perfectly smooth, young readers are introduced to the concept that everyone has unique needs and preferences. Kona loves adventure, but even the slightest wrinkle makes him uncomfortable when it comes to his blanket. He can’t explain why, but it doesn’t feel right.
Carly Major’s writing captures the experience of feeling uneasy in situations that might seem minor to others, offering validation to children who may not yet have the words to describe their discomfort. The rhythmic, rhyming style adds to the charm and makes it fun for children to follow along. One of the book's highlights is its ability to foster empathy. Through colorful illustrations by Mike Coller and relatable characters, children are encouraged to recognize and appreciate their differences and those of others. The story emphasizes that it's perfectly okay to have quirks and that these differences make us who we are. This is a treasure trove for social-emotional learning. It includes insightful discussion prompts for parents and educators, serving as a valuable tool to navigate conversations around personal preferences, comfort, and acceptance. Kona and the Lumpy Bumps is more than just a story about a dog and his blanket—it's an encouraging tale about patience, kindness, and celebrating individuality, making it an excellent resource for families and classrooms.
