What if you found out that you had a magical gift, and instead of a boring life with a mother who dumps you with your grandparents while she goes off on an adventure, you find out that you are a witch and have a special destiny? In Kitty Tweddle and the Wishing Well by H.J. Blenkinsop, that’s what happens to 11-year-old Kitty. Sent by her mother to live with her grandparents for the summer in the village of Dribble, Kitty is first mad that she’s not able to go with her mother, or at least stay with her friends. But as she arrives at her grandparents' home, strange events start to happen. Gargoyles are disappearing around town, and two cats are now talking to Kitty. And she knows what they are saying. Kitty soon learns that she’s a witch, which is a shock because she’s quite sensible and doesn’t believe in witches or magic. But she’ll need to learn to believe really quickly if she’s going to stop the strange monsters trying to take over the town.
Kitty Tweddle and the Wishing Well is a wonderful book for young readers. The obvious comparison to Harry Potter is evident – a young person learns they are more than they seem, and there really is magic in the world – and while Harry Potter is fun, Blenkinsop’s Kitty Tweddle is just as entertaining, and is a character that young readers will enjoy. Kitty must learn to take on the mantle of being a witch and stop the threat to Dribble on her own, without any formal training. She has some help from a kindly doctor who is more than he seems, and the talking cats, but Kitty must overcome the challenges she faces on her own. She is calm and rational in the face of danger (a good trait for a witch) and while she has a lot of help in becoming a witch, she is the one who must decide the actions to be taken, and suffer the consequences for her decisions. I liked that there were consequences to some of the decisions and choices that Kitty made as it shows that even when magic is involved, decisions are not easy and what we do can greatly affect others. Kitty Tweddle and the Wishing Well is an entertaining magical adventure for young readers. H.J. Blenkinsop has created a fun character in Kitty and young readers will want to follow her on more adventures.
