Told in the words of an obvious cat lover, Kitty Kat, Kitty Kat, Tell Me What's New! is a delightful rhyme thoroughly describing a house cat’s activity. The aforementioned Kitty Kat plays with the narrator’s shoe laces, speaks, plays the piano, suns itself and chases its tail, all while presenting a precious image that enamors children and adults alike. Author/songwriter Finnajane MacLeod incorporates photo shopped images to the actions of an assortment of felines in various stages of mischief and daily activity.
Although the written story is amusing, I am certain that the intended young audience would be most receptive to the accompanying video on YouTube. As a filmed cat pantomimes the words to the book lyrics, I am mesmerized by the precise alignment of the text to the feline image’s mouth. The action is actually soothing in a hypnotic way, not unlike the motion of a musical metronome. A huge draw in any children’s publication is the imagery. The use of stock photos, while cute, provides a lesser version of what has potential as an actual work of art. Finnajane MacLeod is obviously familiar with the appropriate cadence of words that will attract a child's attention. As a standalone story without the video, Kitty Kat, Kitty Kat, Tell Me What's New! is the perfect bed time lullaby for any fussy child.
