There’s so much to see and do every day, no matter the weather or the situation. Kitty is very inquisitive and enjoys playing and counting her blessings, even when it’s stormy. She feels so blessed and counts on her “paw-claws.” Everything is part of her counting, from the sun tickling her nose to the crunch of her kibble and the butterfly she chases. Initially, she sulks when it turns rainy. Stuck indoors, it doesn’t take long to find something else to do, like play hide-and-seek – all while counting even more blessings.
Kat E. Erikson’s picture book story, Kitty Counts Her Blessings, is a fun way to learn numbers and to realize the many blessings we all have each and every day. The plot leads the young reader through Kitty’s adventures as she counts her way through all she does, all she sees, and all that makes her feel blessed (even the stormy weather). Most of the presentation is in rhyming verse with lots of repetition of words, particularly the number words, so young readers can start to recognize these words and improve their reading skills.
The colorful illustrations certainly help move along Kitty’s counting adventures, and the illustrations provide opportunities for readers to search for hidden clues and things that they might share as their own blessings. At the end of the book, the author challenges youngsters to list their daily blessings. One of the best blessings Kitty shares is the love for her Boy, as her final words say: “Boy, you’re the best/ So snuggly and nice./ When I count my blessings/ I’ll always count you TWICE.” This is a beautiful, fun, interactive book for young readers.
