Kinzie’s Got Talent (Kinzie's Kinventions) is written by Donna Boock and illustrated by Stephanie Hider. At school, Kinzie gave out flyers from the teacher that turned out to be an announcement for the upcoming talent show. The entire class was so excited that they all decided to practice during recess, except for Kinzie, who didn’t know if she had the talent to participate. The mean comments that Ben made about her not practicing at recess only encouraged her to try several different things to figure out what she could do for the talent show. She tried singing, skating, and hula-hooping with a yo-yo but without much success. What could Kinzie do that could win her the trophy she wanted so badly? How could she prove Ben and his mean words wrong and would she discover her talent in time for the show?
I loved the try-again attitude expressed in Kinzie’s Got Talent (Kinzie's Kinventions). The characters are easy for young children to identify with as they express their excitement over the talent show and work hard on their abilities. Kids can learn a lot about finding inspiration in their everyday activities, practicing skills, and discovering their talents from this story. I recommend this tale by Donna Boock to young children that love inventive narratives with an educational edge. The beautiful illustrations by Stephanie Hider are artistic creations that add an extra flair to the account. I hope to see more work by this author featuring Kinzie, her family, and her classmates that will help teach children valuable lessons while they read.
