I am a particular fan of novels that take place in ancient Egypt, especially ones with a very human element, as is found in King’s Daughter by Lauren Lee Merewether. I found Nefe mildly infuriating, however, with very few qualities to redeem herself. Her behavior toward Paatan and her mother’s steward was, at times, absolutely deplorable, but there is some excuse in that she was mourning. Personally, I found the most likable character to be Paatan. I felt he dominated the story, despite the premise being that it was about Nefe’s journey. His experiences made him the character I wanted to watch and root for. However, this novel will appeal to fans of ancient historical fiction, and I did appreciate the note at the back explaining a bit more about the circumstances in which the novel was set. I would be keen to read other books by Merewether, who very clearly has a passion for this time period in history.

Will General Paaten and the two girls make it out of the palace alive? Is the General as loyal as Pharaoh Nefertiti thought?

King’s Daughter by Lauren Lee Merewether is a fantastic historical novel that will appeal to lovers of archaeology. Set in ancient Egypt and the surrounding lands of Canaan, Goshen, Nubia, and more, this book is a thorough blend of fact and fiction. King’s Daughter is a tale of survival, wit, deceit, trust, greed, and sacrifice. The plot of this story was unique and felt so real, showing me ancient Egypt through the eyes of Nefe and Paaten. The development was perfect, and the characters were consistent with their moods. I enjoyed the simple writing style and flowing dialogue. Lauren also included glossaries at the beginning and end of the novel, which helped with understanding the titles and languages. This story was engaging, and I can’t wait to see what happens with Nefe and Paebel.

Accompanied by General Paaten and Atinuk, Nefe started her journey to the foreign land of Canaan, where she knew no one. However, Nefe could not trust anyone, not even Paaten and not Atinuk. With her whole life shattered, Nefe had to hope for the best and pray that the people of Canaan would not ask too many questions. What will happen to Nefe? Will she safely make it to Canaan? Or will she meet her demise before she reaches safety?

The Lost Pharoah Chronicles series blew me away with its complex plots and incredible characters. I had high hopes of Lauren Lee Merewether delivering a similar experience with King's Daughter. However, it was not the same; it was infinitely better. This time, the story was more complex. Nefe's character was compelling. She was innocent in all this mess, yet she had to make decisions that she never thought she would. She literally to mature mentally and physically if she wanted to survive. This struggle for survival, the fear that her protector would turn on her, and the unpredictability of finding shelter in Canaan all shaped Nefe into a strong woman. The narrative was perfectly paced, the action was always present, and the descriptions made me feel like I was in Egypt with Nefe. Intricate, descriptive, and entertaining! It is a novel I highly recommend.

What results is a harrowing coming of age tale of a young woman rebuilding her life and moving from the status of princess to refugee.

Having read many of the fantastic books in the Lost Pharoah Chronicles over the years, I am always delighted to engage with another touching and realistic drama from author Lauren Lee Merewether, who has once again crafted a knockout work of fiction with plenty of pathos, grit, and inspiration to offer readers. Nefe's is quite a journey as a protagonist ripped from an idyllic life and thrown into the lands of Canaan, which were deftly described with cinematic detail. The new cast of characters (and some more familiar faces) in this tale never cease to captivate with their enigmatic dialogue and double-edged presence, making for a plot that was impossible to predict and very exciting throughout. Overall, I would highly recommend King’s Daughter to fans of detailed ancient historical fiction, realistic characters with deep emotions, and to fans of the existing series everywhere.
