Princess Charlotte is devastated to learn she will be wed to the brooding, unsmiling Prince Young of a foreign kingdom. With her wedding day drawing near, the princess impulsively fires an arrow at her betrothed. As her royal parents attempt to salvage the alliance of the two kingdoms, their kingdom comes under attack. Prince Charlotte and Prince Young must escape to safety together. On their journey, they encounter a pompous prince with no escort, but, despite their suspicions, they have no choice but to allow him to accompany them. When his sinister plot is revealed, Princess Charlotte realizes that she stands to lose everyone she holds dear. Kingdom Cold is the first book in the Kingdom Cold series by Brittni Chenelle.
Fans of young adult fantasy will appreciate the fast-paced, high-stakes plotting in Kingdom Cold. The reader experiences the action alongside the characters so it is unclear who the enemies are; as the cast of diverse main characters discovers the truth, so does the reader. Brittni Chenelle’s writing shines in the depictions of the complex emotions of the characters. Told through multiple points of view, even minor characters stand out in this story. Princess Charlotte feels like enemies are coming at her from all sides, and she is forced to grow up very quickly. Grappling with her growing affection for Prince Young and her duties to her family and kingdom, Princess Charlotte’s character arc is especially well-developed. An engaging young adult romantic fantasy, Kingdom Cold has ties to Arthurian legend, which solidified my interest in continuing with the series.
