Killers Keep Secrets: The Golden State Killer's Other Life by James Huddle is an honest and raw account of James’s life as the brother-in-law of the Golden State Killer, Joseph James DeAngelo. James starts off by explaining how DeAngelo became a part of the family, followed by his own, as well as DeAngelo’s movements, for all those years up to his arrest. James provides insight into the life of a killer by exploring his feelings toward DeAngelo as well as potential red flags that he might have missed. He paints the picture of a man that almost no one would have thought could be such a heinous rapist and killer. In so doing, he confirms that the age-old idiom of “hidden in plain sight” can be applied to almost anyone.
As a true crime junkie, I knew I had to read this account of an infamous serial killer by his brother-in-law. I was well aware of The Golden State Killer’s crimes but was in the dark about the killer himself. Facts about his date of birth and where he lived are insufficient to build a picture of a killer in your mind. What James Huddle does in Killers Keep Secrets is to show us the real character of this infamous man, albeit through a sometimes distant lens. I found it quite interesting how James goes on to explain how the investigation and arrest impacted him and his family, which is often an overlooked point. And most of all I appreciate James’s care in recording all the victims affected by DeAngelo and, rightfully so, wishing them peace.
