Kid Ninja and the Notorious Nine by M. L. Hollaway speaks about bullying and the pain and hardship it causes to the person who is undergoing it. This is the story of Kevin, a fifth-grade student who is bullied in school every day. Kevin is never able to defend himself. The twist in the story happens when Kevin sees a video and gets infatuated with Kato, otherwise known as Bruce Lee. Kato comes to Kevin in his midnight dream and crowns him Kid Ninja. That boosts Kevin's confidence and he is well equipped to handle all the bullies in the school. Now the school is free from bullies but Kid Ninja is faced with another problem. Someone breaks into the elementary school and steals the money they have kept for their trip to Beijing, China. Kevin holds a karate session and selects nine other children with karate skills for this mission.
The book is packed with action, yet at the same time deals with a social issue faced by many people - bullying. Bullying is a cruel thing to do to anyone because it is spiteful and hateful, keeping in mind that bullying is intentional. As parents, teachers, and students, we should condemn bullying and protect our children from it. The author throughout the story tells readers to put a stop to the malicious act of bullying. Bullying in school can result in damaging a child forever. It can affect children badly and many of them withdraw into a shell. The author has woven an action packed theme into a social issue with expertise.
