Raquel Franco’s Keep Me Wild has a delightful way of connecting to the reader and consequently we are left with a different experience after reading each poem in this collection. Her poetry touches on love, heartbreak, and rising above to find strength in yourself. She has trimmed the fat, with no poem longer than a page, which I appreciate as a reader because I feel a poem should be able to finish itself on one page. There’s a noticeable and powerful change in the middle; it goes from light and loving to dark and a bit spiraling, to finding inner strength at the end, all executed well.

Some lines are simply brilliant, they are perfectly innovative. One of those lines being, “I left with butterflies inside my skin”. Interesting to read and imagine how that might look and feel even though she’s describing a feeling; it’s quite palpable and moving. I admire poetry and writing that is candid and these poems created by Raquel Franco leave you with something you can sink your teeth into. If I were to find fault at all within these pages it would be that there was some repetitiveness throughout with specific words being used in consecutive poems that took away a bit of the shine of the poem before it. I would suggest ordering the poems differently so that some words aren’t repeating so close to one another and each poem feels uniquely itself because they deserve the right to sparkle.
