Just Thinking: Spiritual Reflections & Poetry is a work of non-fiction in the religion and philosophy subgenres. It is suitable for the general adult reading audience and was penned by Dr. Charles A. Guilford III. The book is a collection of blog entries written with a view to spiritually reflect on the trials and tribulations of daily life and aid readers in their own spiritual journeys. Collected in print for the first time following the author’s rediscovery of the blog, these considerations about the world around us and the journey we undertake through life serve to give readers their own inspiration to stop and meditate on their own lives.
It was a concern of mine reading this that the nature of a blog would make for a confusing book, with each entry usually being prompted by some random occurrence in the author’s life. It can be so easy to lose any sense of narrative thread between posts. These concerns were quickly allayed as I dived deeper into Dr. Charles A. Guilford III’s writings, which cover a fascinating array of topics but all through the lens of thoughtful contemplation and reflection. The simplicity of Guilford’s writing creates a wonderfully welcoming forum for readers to consider their own lives, but at the same time, it belies a level of profound understanding about the world and our place in it. Just Thinking is probably the most accessible and approachable spiritual book you’ll see this year, and I cannot recommend it highly enough for those who want to gently explore their spirituality without being prescribed what direction to take.
