Julia Bops to the Beat by PB&j is a charming story about a girl who is not old enough to talk, but she hears a beat in almost everything. The narration is syncopated with explosive consonant sounds of B and C and P. When you listen to this story, it pops with sound! The illustrations by Aveira Studio are colorful and appealing. They tell the story on some pages without the words, a strong blend of story and illustration.
This is an appealing book for toddlers through first grade children who love the sounds of words. Some children will bop along with Julia, while others will enjoy the idea that their little brother or sister may be like Julia — bouncing and swaying to the sounds that delight them, even before they can talk. One nice moment in the book is when Julia’s two older brothers join in the fun and show that her beat is contagious.
Julia is old enough to sleep in a bed and brush her teeth, so she may also be an encouraging character for children who talk late (and their families, too.) My favorite part of the book is the bright pictures and rhythmic narration that make me want to hop and hum along with Julia. I also like the surprise ending, because it is the sounds that have taught Julia to speak. This is a fun book for parents and grandparents to share with younger children. Julia Bops to the Beat is a delightful blend of rhythmic story and bright illustrations!
