Every family is unique and special, but not all are the same. Although the standard is one father and one mother, this dynamic is not always the case. This can make growing up with only one parent difficult for children. It's important to talk to them so they understand the situation better. In Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood, Dedrick L Moone uses his own experience to address this topic. The story is about Lamar, a boy who lives alone with his mother, and shows some of the complications and emotional conflicts he goes through as he grows up. Through various situations, we see his doubts and how he tackles some meetings with his father. However, Lamar's story doesn't stop there because we witness how he becomes a good father in taking care of his beautiful daughter, and also the new situations he has to go through.
Because of his experiences, Lamar has difficulty trusting people, which is understandable when witnessing their joys and disappointments. There are bitter moments because his meetings with his father were not as he idealized them. We also see him having trouble interacting with other people at certain times. That is precisely why I liked this story because it is realistic. Many children go through similar situations and don't have anyone to talk to about it. We see Lamar overcoming his emotional conflicts little by little. Dedrick L Moone narrates in detail a wide variety of situations, which I think will be helpful for many single parents. In addition, the illustrations are colorful and expressive. Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood is ideal for single parents and children to become even closer.
