"Journey with Me 1 2 3" is no typical counting book. So many of those are geared toward the very young learner, aged 2 to 4 with simple counting. This book, however, is a great book that teaches counting and directly links it to addition. In a way, it serves as an early introduction to word problems. A few years down the line, those will not seem quite so frightening! I really like that the book goes all the way up to 20 where so many stop at 10. My most favorite part is that it creates an interactive story for parents to read to their children. Since so many counting books do stop at 10, I thought at first that the author's choice of objects to count seemed rather random. However, in the end they all were related and played out the journey quite well! The rhyming text really does take you on a journey!
Obviously, this book is suited for up to pre-school because of its counting assistance. However, I can see how it could be beneficial up to second or third grade for students who are having trouble getting the concept of addition. This is one of those books that kids will want to hang onto even when they outgrow it. It will bring back memories of early learning, of loved ones spending time with them to read it, and of the first time they ever read it alone and did the math all for themselves!
