Wow! I just finished reading Lori Crane’s excellent book, John Culpepper: The Merchant, and I couldn’t be more satisfied. The second book in the John Culpepper series, this book is a sweeping historical drama following the titular John Culpepper in a time when he fears for the safety of his family in their homeland. In 1700s England, the Culpeppers, who have always been royalists, find themselves in conflict with their very neighbors when King Charles takes a Catholic princess as a bride, appoints an archbishop who is a Catholic supporter, and disbands Parliament. When civil war breaks out, John, who is across the world in the Americas, worries that his family may suffer the consequences of their support, perhaps even at the hands of their neighbors and friends. John hatches a plan to rescue his family, but will his ship be fast enough, will the darkness hide him, or will his plot be discovered, much to the detriment of them all?
I love historical fiction. I love it even more when I learn about real situations that I had previously been unaware of. John Culpepper: The Merchant is just such a book. I learned a great deal about the reign of King Charles and the civil uprising that ensued. This book is a fun, exciting and intriguing adventure, and I couldn’t put it down. I understand that Mr. Culpepper is author Lori Crane’s tenth great-grandfather, and the love and care she has for her history shines through in her meticulous story-telling. I would absolutely recommend this book to any lover of historical fiction or action/adventure reading, and I am very much looking forward to reading more by this author.
