The first pages of Joaquin Around New York: A Doggy Adventure Story illustrate that his trip to the Big Apple has experiences that would delight aspiring travelers. Exploring NYC from his perspective sets the pace for this engaging sojourn, as 'interpreted' by his mama, Julie Dugan. Whether making the connection between the height of the Empire State Building and the American Revolution, offering a vibrant description of Chinatown, or appreciating the origins of Harlem, every stop showcases how informed awareness makes any imaginary or in-person visit far richer.
In relating this tour, Julie Dugan creates a narrative that promotes reader immersion. What child would not be captivated by learning there is a place in Grand Central Station where you can hear whispers across the breadth of its vast expanse? Photos of the charismatic Joaquin highlight every step along the way. Each observation discusses what would naturally evoke a child’s interest and the value of ongoing learning. At the end of the book, Julie adds her voice in an engaging, ‘did-you-know’ section. A brief discussion of the fate of Manhattan’s first residents follows nuggets of interesting trivia. It will likely surprise the reader that the oldest pizzeria in New York City still thrives. Joaquin Around New York is one of a series of books about touring other places. It is no wonder such travel would appeal to a wide range of avid young adventurers. The tale highlights that knowing beforehand can foster a mindset of creative fascination.
