Joanne Jenkins’s Giant Jelly Donut is written by Andrew Gunn and illustrated by Taryn Gunn. Joanne Jenkins has one humungous jelly-filled donut delivered to her home. She wants to share the fun of decorating and eating the giant treat with her friends. She passed an invitation around, full of excitement for the big day. On the day her donut was delivered, a table was prepared with chairs for them to stand on while they decorated and added their favorite toppings. Who did Joanne invite? What flavors and toppings will they bring? Will it be all gooey or will there be toppings of candy and crunches too? What would you have brought to Joanne’s donut party?
Joanne Jenkins’s Giant Jelly Donut by Andrew Gunn is a story full of fun and yummy treats. I love that this story encourages kids to share their favorite things the way Joanne wanted to share such an enormous treat with her friends. The characters are well-defined with their own unique tastes that matched the treats they added to the donut. The illustrations by Taryn Gunn are colorful and full of elaborate pictures that tell the story as well as the words do. I recommend this giant of a story to anyone who has children. This sweet-toothed story will surely reinforce the idea of sharing as they read or follow along. Don’t forget there is a donut at the end for kids to color and fill in with all the toppings they would want to add!
